The 7 Wonders of Water Sep 11, 2009
You stay slimmer drinking water. Especially cold water. Not only does zero calorie water not contribute to excessive sugar intake like soda and juice, but it actually revs up the metabolism by needing to heat the water once it’s inside the body. This burns calories, while giving you a fuller feeling in the process.
Water also boosts energy. The human body needs water to function. Water helps the blood transport oxygen and other essential nutrients to the cells..Without water, our cells could not perform many of the processes and functions they need to for us to live. Pure water gives our body the energy to stay alive.
Water lowers stress. There is a link between stress and water intake. The common thread is dehydration. When the body is dehydrated, it becomes stressed, increasing cortisol levels. When the body is stressed, it raises your heart rate, increases blood pressure, and causes you to breath heavier; all contributing to water loss and dehydration. So, if you remain hydrated, you can reduce the magnitude of the physiological responses, and retain the water you so desperately need.
Water builds muscle tone. Muscle tissue needs water to grow and multiply, build and repair. A well-hydrated body does not retain water or look bloated, but a dehydrated body does. Water also prevents muscle cramping and lubricates the joints. When you are well-hydrated, you can also exercise longer and stronger.
Water nourishes the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are deeper when you’re dehydrated. Water is nature’s own beauty cream. Drinking water hydrates skin cells and plumps them up, making your face look younger. It also flushes out impurities and improves circulation and blood flow, leaving your face clean, clear, and glowing.
Water keeps the bowels regular. Along with fiber, water is essential to good digestion. Water helps dissolve waste particles and passes them smoothly through your digestive tract. If you’re dehydrated, your body absorbs all the water, leaving your colon dry and making it more difficult to pass waste.
Water reduces kidney stones. The rate of painful kidney stones is rising because people – including children – aren’t drinking enough water. Water dilutes the salts and minerals in your urine that form the solid crystals known as kidney stones. Kidney stones can’t form in diluted urine, so reduce your risk with plenty of water!
Are you getting enough water daily? Dietitians recommend the 8X8 rule. Eight, eight ounce glasses of pure, cold water every day. More is just a bonus! Make it a MINUMUM goal just to reach the 8X8 daily. Other beverages do count, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
