Influenza Overview Oct 30, 2009
The Flu…Influenza is a viral infection that has various effects on people but mainly causes mild illness similar to a cold but is usually worse and lasts longer. Most flu outbreaks occur in the months surroung late fall and winter.
- The flu is caused by influenza viruses A and B as well as other manipulated strains such as H1N1, commonly known as Swine flu. There are many different strains and types of the flu virus every year.
- Symptoms of the flu are typically the same in all individuals. Symptoms include fever, body aches, headache, dry cough and a sore or dry throat. Symptoms usually are the worst during the first 3-4 days of the illness, but can take more than a week or two to clear up. Coming in contact with someone affected by the flu is one of the easiest ways in which you can become ill as well.
- The flu is diagnosed by a doctor after examination. Most physicians will ask you a few questions relating to your symptoms and if you’ve been around others with the illness. In other cases your doctor will do a blood test or take a sample of fluid from your nose or throat to find out if you have the flu.
- The flu can be treated at home for most people. Home treatment consists of rest, plenty of water and fluid intake, and taking a medicine to help lower your fever. If you believe you have the flu, your physician may be able to give you medicine that can make your symptoms milder.
- You can help prevent influenza by getting a flu vaccine yearly or by taking products such as Colostrum to help boost the functioning of your immune system to help ward off illness.
