Don’t forget to eat your vegetables May 3, 2011

So you don’t like Broccoli, well maybe this will help it go down a little easier. Broccoli is a ubiquitous vegetable that is part of a family of vegetables that is a veritable goldmine when it comes to cancer prevention.

Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable, which is part of the cabbage family. Cruciferous veggies get their name from their plants’ four-petal flowers, which look like a cross (crucifix).

There is a ton of evidence and it is overwhelming that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables helps prevent cancer. Cruciferous vegetables in particular are a rich source of sulfur-containing compounds called glucosinolates, which break down during digestion. Glucosinolates help eliminate carcinogens before they can damage DNA or change the cell-signaling pathways that prevent the transformation of normal cells into cancer.

This metabolic byproduct may also help regulate our body’s complex system of cancer defense enzymes. There’s even evidence that glucosinolates alter the metabolism or actions of hormones to inhibit the development of hormone-sensitive cancers, such as breast cancer.

Glucosinolates break down into several compounds, including isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates offset the harmful effects of the carcinogens produced when we process or cook meat, which is a major cause of colon cancer. Eating about four one-half cup servings of cruciferous vegetables each week may reduce your risk of colon cancer by 20 to 50 percent.

Cruciferous vegetables are also rich in other critical nutrients, including calcium, iron, folate, and fiber.

So if you don’t like the taste of Broccoli try Colon Complete by FutureBiotics. It is the complete colon care supplement it provides an all natural source of soluble dietary fiber, combined with beneficial components such as fruits and vegetables that help protect your colon.

Taking A daily multivitamin is important for good nutrition Apr 22, 2011

When it comes to eating right it is difficult to know whether you are getting the right about of vitamins and minerals through your foods. Unless you are growing your own and buying organic you really never know how processed food holds its vitamins and nutrients. Trying to follow all the studies on vitamins and health is almost impossible, and having a deficiency in trace minerals can lead to big health consequences down the road. A daily multivitamin is a great way to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need to be healthy. The folic acid in most multivitamins helps prevent neural tube defects in newborns; it may lower the risk of heart disease, colon cancer, and breast cancer. Vitamin D from a multivitamin supplement can lower the risk of colon and possibly many other cancers. It’s important not to take more than the recommended daily amounts. While a multivitamin supplement can help fill some of the gaps in a less than optimal diet, too much can be harmful. In general, stick close to standard recommended doses in a multivitamin. And since your multivitamin will likely contain all the folic acid you’ll need, stay away from other foods that are super-fortified with folic acid.

Certainly a multivitamin helps against deficiencies in vitamins and nutrients but it is more important to eat right. Choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and healthy oils, and low in red meat and unhealthy fats. A daily multivitamin is an inexpensive nutrition insurance policy and taking one every day is good way to protect your health. In addition to its bone health benefits, there’s growing evidence that getting some extra vitamin D can help lower the risk of colon and breast cancer. Aim for getting 1,000 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day. Higher doses of vitamin E may help to prevent heart disease, but in general, the amount in a standard multivitamin is enough to have health benefits. Most multivitamins also have a day’s worth of folic acid, so you should avoid foods that have high amounts of folic acid added to them, but Vitamin D is an exception, as many people need more than the RDA.

Is Your Pre-Workout Nutrition On Target Apr 7, 2011

Throughout my years of bodybuilding, gym owner, and personal training I have seen eager young weight lifters come and go and most of them go. One big reason that young bodybuilders don’t become old bodybuilders it the fact that most do not reach the goals they had in mind for their physiques. Many give up quickly because they are not the size of Ronnie Coleman after 1 year of lifting weights. Others who stick around longer but eventually quit hit plateaus that they can not get past and feel that they are just spinning their wheels.

One of the critical mistakes I see them make is not having their nutrition routine in place. Someone told me once to match my workout to my nutrition not my nutrition to my workout. I never really knew what that meant for a long time until I hit a plateau. I had been making good muscular gains for a few years but then got stuck around 195 pounds. I tried new lifting routines, negatives, isometrics, explosive routines, training 7 days a week and many other workouts but nothing seemed to help, I was stuck at 195 lbs.

That is when I remembered the saying, “Match my workout to my nutrition”. Sure I was trying to eat more but I was not eating at the right time nor eating the right things at the right time. I never thought about my pre workout nutrition. So I decided to do some research on the how foods help you during times of physical stress. It turns out that eating a good meal and taking good supplements after the physical workout is important but what is also important is having the proper nutrients and glycogen stores in your system and ready to be called upon is critical.

This is how it went down. I would work a 8-10 day and go straight to the gym. I would take a ephedra supplement to get me fired up for the workout but never ate anything because I didn’t want to throw up. This was a big mistake and the sole reason I was stuck at 195 lbs.

I found a product called Mass Maker from Beverly International. I had always thought is was just a weight gainer, well it turns out that it is one of the most complete nutrition drinks available. Yes there are plenty other good ones now but this was 15 years ago.
Once I started using Mass Maker about 2 hours before my workout I noticed my energy was better throughout my workout. I thought I didn’t hit it hard, because I was not exhausted. The next thing I noticed was that my pumps in the gym were fuller. Somethings I like my skin would explode it was so tight. Then finally after about 6 weeks I started noticing weight gain. I jumped across the 200 pound barrier for the first time in my life. This gain in weight continued until I reached about 215 lbs. This took about 6 months. Over the next few years I got my weight up to 240 lbs at 6% body fat and competed for the first time as a heavy weight at 212 pounds at 4% body-fat.

I can think back to how discouraged I was at going to the gym day after day and trying new things only to see the scale read 195 lbs for nearly a year. I would have been very easy to quit but I glad I didn’t. I only wish that there was someone to tell me about pre-work nutrition then. BodyBuilding On A Budget Apr 4, 2011

As a college student I had already been a competitive bodybuilder and didn’t want to stop building muscle while I was in college for 4 or 5 years. However as most of you know college is expensive and takes up a lot of your time. This means less time for work and less time for making money.

As most of you know EveryThingAnitAging.com has the lowest prices on BodyBuilding Supplements but even with the lowest prices in the world it can still cost a few dollars to buy the proper supplementation needed to continue to put on muscle.

So what is a lifter to do?

I’m going to give you a short list of the most economical ways to get good nutritional supplements to continue your muscle growth even though you wallet may be experiencing atrophy.

First thing that I always tell a new bodybuilder is that you must have good nutrition. If you don’t have good nutrition you are wasting your time. If your wallet is tight you should try to maximize your supplement dollar. There are still a few quality proteins out there at a fair price. Protein is essential for building muscle and bodybuilders need more that others. 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day is a good guide. One of our best proteins for the price is Pure Whey Fusion, by Champion Nutrition For $40.

OK, now that your protein is taken care of we are still going to stay after the nutrition aspect of building muscle. Trace minerals and vitamins are critical to building healthy muscle. Deficiencies in these areas don’t show up immediately but will eventually with catastrophic results. I recommend either the Beverly Super Pack or Universal Animal Pack, both are good and fairly priced.

The last item I would recommend for the weight lifter on a budget is a good creatine product. Ultimate Nutrition has 1000 grams of creatine, 100% Creatine Monohydrate 1000g Ultimate Nutrition for $22.99.

If you have a little more money to spend the last item I would suggest is Beverly International Mass Maker. This products name is somewhat misleading. Even though it can be used to build muscle mass, Mass Maker is one of the most complete meal replacements made. Beverly International makes some of the purest supplements available. You can use this product to replace junk food meals and actually save yourself money.

So there you have it, for less than $100 per month you can insure that your bodybuilding goals or weight lifting aspirations can continue to benefit you and not harm your physique. Certainly there are other supplements that you can take to accelerate your muscle building endeavors but it you money is tight this is the best plan to follow to make sure you are doing your body good.

Build Your Own Post Workout Recovery Drink Mar 17, 2011

In a time of everything being mixed and made for you, some may still like to just build their own post workout recovery drink mix. Yes there are thousands to choose from with a million different ingredients all designed to do something different and have great effects. If that may be a little too overwhelming for you below is an all natural post workout mix you can do yourself.

1. L-Glutamine, this abundant amino acid plays the most important role in promoting muscle recovery. Glutamine also helps fight off fatigue and increases immune system health during times of increased physical stress. Keeping your body’s levels of glutamine high when exercising is very beneficial.

2. Whey Protein provides your body with the perfect amino acid profile for muscle building, strength and recovery. It is the fastest absorbing protein so that it quickly and efficiently gets into your muscles. This is important after training so that your muscles can regenerate their glycogen levels fast.

3. Branched Chain Amino Acids are the building blocks of protein. They are an absolute must to increase recovery and aid in protein synthesis. BCAA’s helps stop overtraining and increases your body’s ability to efficiently use other supplements to increase recovery times.

4. Lysine works with other BCAA’s to maintain muscle growth, lean body mass, and the body’s store of nitrogen. All these functions lead to helping your body recover from increased exercise and reduce the buildup of lactic acid in the muscles. This reduces the feelings of sore stiff muscles the day after training so you can get back to your training.

Mix 5 to 10 grams of L-Glutamine, 20 to 40 grams of whey protein, 5 to 10 grams of BCAA’s, along with 1 gram of Lysine together and mix. Drink within 15 minutes of finishing your training session. This all natural blend will have you feeling great and ready to return to your training faster than ever.

For all your Post Workout Recovery Supplements make sure and shop www.EverytingAntiAging.com, we have all your nutrition needs at some of the lowest online prices available.

Whole Eggs or Just Egg Whites Mar 4, 2011

Many only eat egg whites and not the entire egg because of being told that egg whites are the most important and healthiest part of the egg. The question is if this is true or not? Egg whites contain only small amounts of fat and 4 grams of protein per each egg white. An entire egg contains 5 grams of fat and 6 grams of protein.

While both parts of an egg contain BCAA’s, the fat content in whole eggs if consumed in large amounts may be unhealthy for some individuals. The trick to getting the best of both worlds is to add 1 to 2 whole eggs per day along with your daily servings of just egg whites.

The reason this is recommended is because whole eggs contain good amount of the B Vitamins thiamine, folate, riboflavin, B6 and B12. The yolks are high in Leucine which is important in reducing muscle hypertrophy. Egg yolks have also shown to curb hunger cravings and those who eat eggs daily have shown significant increases in strength and muscle mass gains, versus those who just eat egg whites only.

Iron Supplements for Your Health Feb 13, 2011

There are two forms of dietary iron products, heme and nonheme. Heme iron is derived from hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells. Heme iron is found in animal foods that originally contained hemoglobin, such as red meats, fish, and poultry. Iron in plant foods such as lentils and beans is arranged in a chemical structure called nonheme iron. This is the form of iron is added to iron enriched and iron-fortified foods. Heme iron is absorbed better than nonheme iron, but most dietary iron supplements use nonheme iron.

Iron is found in both animal and plant foods, but in different forms. Beef and turkey are good sources of heme iron while beans and lentils are high in nonheme iron. Many foods, such as ready to eat cereals, are fortified with iron. Foods provide an array of nutrients and other compounds that may have beneficial effects on health.
