To many people in the world when you tell them you are trying to gain weight they think you are crazy, but there are a large group of people who want to gain weight. Their reasons vary from sports, to illness, to aesthetics. What ever their reason, gaining weight can be just as difficult to do as losing weight, especially when you are trying to gain weight but not trying to add a lot of body fat. This task can be quiet difficult.

There are a few ways to gain weight. One way is to increase you caloric intake. Increasing your caloric intake above what your body utilizes can cause your body to begin storing extra body fat. For some this may not be a issue, especially if you feel that you are to skinny or boney. Many athletes need additional weight to play certain sports. Football players in particular often need to put on a few pounds and often basketball players who are tall and lanky need addition weight to be able to fight for position under the goal.

The best way to gain weight is through a combination of resistance weight training, increasing you calories with nutrient dense foods and supplements, and potentially boosting hormones like testosterone and GH. Throughout my years of bodybuilding, gym owner, and personal training I have seen eager young weight lifters come and go and most of them go. One big reason that young bodybuilders don’t become old bodybuilders it the fact that most do not reach the goals they had in mind for their physiques. Many give up quickly because they are not the size of Ronnie Coleman after 1 year of lifting weights. Others who stick around longer but eventually quit hit plateaus that they can not get past and feel that they are just spinning their wheels.

One of the critical mistakes I see them make is not having their nutrition routine in place. Someone told me once to match my workout to my nutrition not my nutrition to my workout. I never really knew what that meant for a long time until I hit a plateau. I had been making good muscular gains for a few years but then got stuck around 195 pounds. I tried new lifting routines, negatives, isometrics, explosive routines, training 7 days a week and many other workouts but nothing seemed to help, I was stuck at 195 lbs.

That is when I remembered the saying, “Match my workout to my nutrition”. Sure I was trying to eat more but I was not eating at the right time nor eating the right things at the right time. I never thought about my pre workout nutrition. So I decided to do some research on the how foods help you during times of physical stress. It turns out that eating a good meal and taking good supplements after the physical workout is important but what is also important is having the proper nutrients and glycogen stores in your system and ready to be called upon is critical.

This is how it went down. I would work a 8-10 day and go straight to the gym. I would take a ephedra supplement to get me fired up for the workout but never ate anything because I didn’t want to throw up. This was a big mistake and the sole reason I was stuck at 195 lbs.

I would have been very easy to quit but I glad I didn’t. I only wish that there was someone to tell me about pre-work nutrition then. As a college student I had already been a competitive bodybuilder and didn’t want to stop building muscle while I was in college for 4 or 5 years. However as most of you know college is expensive and takes up a lot of your time. This means less time for work and less time for making money.

Time To Get Ripped For your First Bodybuilding Contest Mar 31, 2011

As a 5 time overall bodybuilding champion I know a thing or two about getting ripped for a bodybuilding show. There are several ways to lose body fat and get that lean hard muscular look that wins you your weight class and maybe the overall trophy. It is not easy to train hard, reduce your calories, and concentrate on your contest, but if you follow these simple steps it can be much less taxing.

My favorite way to reduce fat was not to get fat. If you don’t put on 20lbs of extra fat during the off season you don’t have to diet as hard and you can actually continue to put on muscle as the contest gets closer. My off season weight was around 215 and I competed at 198. I know what your saying, “That’s 17 pounds over you contest weight.” My answer is, of course it is. No one can walk around 3 to 4 % body fat. My point is not to get 30 to 40 pounds over you contest weight. I can lose 17 pounds in a week if needed, but I don’t.

My way of getting ready for the contest was through training hard, eating sensibly, taking quality supplements, and using a good fat burning, thermogenic diet pill. This is exactly what I would do 60 days before a bodybuilding show. I would cut out a lot of sugar. No soft drinks, candy, cakes, or snacks that had high sugar content. I always made sure that I trained every day. Whether is was calves, stair stepper, weights, bike, whatever, I just made sure that I was burning calories and sweating each day. I practised my posing every night. Posing brings out definition and builds your endurance for holding poses on stage. I increased my eating. I actually eat more food, like chicken, fish, vegetables, steak……

For supplements my 2 favorites where Beverly International Mass 500 Amino’s and Ultra 40 Desiccated Liver. During the last 2 weeks I would take 1 bottle of Beverly International Muscularity. During the last 3-4 weeks I would throw in an Ephedra Diet Pill like Zenatrol, Superdrine or Green Stinger.

I always remember other bodybuilders looking like they were exhausted and worn out a few weeks before a contest but I always felt good and my workouts were stronger than ever. Why get fat then have to be miserable for 2-3 months before a contest and have to diet so hard that you lose muscle. That doesn’t make sense. So if you plan on competing in the near future, get your body fat down to 7-8 % know and you will be glad you did come contest day.

Is Beverly International Nutrition The Best Supplement Line? Mar 26, 2011

I have been in the bodybuilding building field as a competitor, supplement vendor, personal trainer for nearly 30 years. As a 5 time overall bodybuilding champion I have used nearly every supplement their is. I was there when the only supplement available was protein and Weider was king of all supplement sales. I lived through and loved the ando, prohormone supplements which were very effective but many of them have been removed from the market. There are still a few good ones still left like A50 and Testatrol though. Thank goodness that you can still get ephedra weight loss pills like Green Stinger and EPH 100. Like I have said I have been there through a multitude of changes in the bodybuilding world and supplement industry.
