A Healthy Immune System is the Answer Dec 18, 2009

A healthy immune system is the answer

A Healthy Immune System

People ask everyday what they can do about avoiding illness, sickness and disease, especially when we are all bombarded with it daily via bacteria and viruses lurking around every corner. The answer is simple, maintain a healthy immune system to ward off illness.

The immune system is one of the most complex systems in the body.  It is so complex that we are only just beginning to understand the full scope of its action. A healthy immune system is fully capable of detecting and destroying all the harmful organisms that enter the body. Considering the millions of bacteria, viruses, fungus and other pathogens that we encounter that cause the simple cold to serious disease, our immune systems do an amazing job. on the other hand, most health problems stem from a weakened immune system.

We currently live in a society where immune deficiency is practically an epidemic. Our immune systems are bombarded with toxins and stresses at every turn. Air pollution, depleted oxygen levels, treatment chemicals in drinking water, pesticides, electromagnetic frequencies, poor nutrition and emotional stress are all difficult to avoid. In addition to a less than perfect world, add a plethora of fast food chains, refined carbs, carbonated drinks and excessive amounts of sugar and you have no way of not considering immune deficiency an epidemic.

Until recently, we have very few products to help strengthen our immune systems. Exercise, diet. pure water, herbs and supplements can only do so much. However, with the recent research conducted on Bovine Colostrum, our options have just gotten better. not only does colostrum function like a supplemental immune system, fighting pathogens just like it does for newborn babies, but the other factors found in colostrum help strengthen and rebuild a weakened immune system.

So whether you’re battling the common cold to a serious health concern, or you just want to boost your immune system productivity, colostrum can make a substantial difference. The answer to maintaining a healthy lifestyle forever and always id to have a healthy immune system.

Treat for dental health Nov 6, 2009

Raisins - Treats for your teeth

Recent studies have revealed that chewy raisins may help provide special benefits to your pearly whites. Raisins contain phytochemicals that help fight off cavities by inhibiting the development of certain types of oral bacteria that can cause serious damage to your teeth. Raisins will also help prevent bacteria from sticking to your teeth. Raisins are loaded with heart healthy nutrients known as flavonoids. Flavonoids are antioxidant like compounds that help reduce the risk of many types of cancers and some rare forms of dementia. Many recent studies have suggested that raisins have many dental health benefits as well due to flavonoids and phytochemicals. Researchers found isolated compounds in raisins that have been shown to inhibit bacteria that cause cavities as well as periodontal disease. More research is still needed to confirm these findings, but in the meantime, try treating your teeth to some raisins to help maintain oral hygiene and good health. It is recommended that you try and keep your teeth clean and healthy by religiously brushing and flossing everyday and having periodic dental health checkups as well as professional teeth cleanings.

Stay on top of regular brushing, flossing and dental screenings to help keep your mouth healthy.

The Right Way to Measure your heart rate…Check your pulse first, catch your breath after! Sep 25, 2009

The Right Way to Measure Your Heart RateYour pulse is the best way to gauge exercise intensity, but taking it by hand may cause you to underestimate how hard you’re working! Noted by many personal trainers, and others in the health and fitness field will tell you that your heart rate steadily declines once you stop moving up to almost 5 beats every 10 seconds, so measure immediately after training. But take note that it takes an average of 17-20 seconds for most people to even find and take their pulse! The lag and time elapsed might lead you to bump up intensity during the rest of your session when you are already working hard enough. You could make it easier on yourself and more practical with a heart rate monitor that takes the brainwork out of it for you! But if you’d rather check your heart rate the old fashion way, try this solution; add about 5-6 beats to your end count if it only takes you several seconds to find your pulse. Add up to 10 if it takes you more than several seconds to get the right spot or if you stop and catch your breath before checking your rate!

The 7 Wonders of Water Sep 11, 2009

waterYou stay slimmer drinking water.  Especially cold water.  Not only does zero calorie water not contribute to excessive sugar intake like soda and juice, but it actually revs up the metabolism by needing to heat the water once it’s inside the body.  This burns calories, while giving you a fuller feeling in the process.
Water also boosts energy.  The human body needs water to function.  Water helps the blood transport oxygen and other essential nutrients to the cells..Without water, our cells could not perform many of the processes and functions they need to for us to live.  Pure water gives our body the energy to stay alive.
Water lowers stress.  There is a link between stress and water intake.  The common thread is dehydration.  When the body is dehydrated, it becomes stressed, increasing cortisol levels.  When the body is stressed, it raises your heart rate, increases blood pressure, and causes you to breath heavier; all contributing to water loss and dehydration.  So, if you remain hydrated, you can reduce the magnitude of the physiological responses, and retain the water you so desperately need.
Water builds muscle tone.  Muscle tissue needs water to grow and multiply, build and repair.  A well-hydrated body does not retain water or look bloated, but a dehydrated body does.  Water also prevents muscle cramping and lubricates the joints. When you are well-hydrated, you can also exercise longer and stronger.
Water nourishes the skin.  Fine lines and wrinkles are deeper when you’re dehydrated. Water is nature’s own beauty cream.  Drinking water hydrates skin cells and plumps them up, making your face look younger.  It also flushes out impurities and improves circulation and blood flow, leaving your face clean, clear, and glowing.
Water keeps the bowels regular.  Along with fiber, water is essential to good digestion. Water helps dissolve waste particles and passes them smoothly through your digestive tract. If you’re dehydrated, your body absorbs all the water, leaving your colon dry and making it more difficult to pass waste.
Water reduces kidney stones. The rate of painful kidney stones is rising because people – including children – aren’t drinking enough water. Water dilutes the salts and minerals in your urine that form the solid crystals known as kidney stones. Kidney stones can’t form in diluted urine, so reduce your risk with plenty of water!
Are you getting enough water daily?  Dietitians recommend the 8X8 rule.  Eight, eight ounce glasses of pure, cold water every day.  More is just a bonus!  Make it a MINUMUM goal just to reach the 8X8 daily.  Other beverages do count, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

The suprising disease that women are at risk for too Sep 8, 2009

I know most people think that Parkinson’s disease affects typically only elderly men, but think differently. The fact is that up to 100,000 women under the age of 50 will suffer from this neurological condition. Luckily there is research and studies being done to help show that there may be a few simple steps women can take to protect themselves from this disease.

Exercise may help reduce the risk of Parkinson's in WomenStep 1 - Studies have shown that adults who sipped at least half a cup of coffee a day were 2-3 times less likely to develop the disorder than those adults who rarely drank any.

Step 2 – Eating a diet high in poly and monounsaturated fats that can be found in nuts, fish and olive oil will reduce your odds of getting the disease by up to 30%.

Step 3 - Researchers have discovered that people who engaged in moderate to vigorous exercise, like running and swimming for up to 5-6 hours a week are at least 40% less likely to develop Parkinson’s than people who find the couch a little too comfy!

Beat Those Baby Blues Sep 3, 2009

Beat The Baby Blues

It is very normal, and often typical to feel down and have trouble concentrating right after your delivery. Fortunately, you can brighten you outlook safely with these healthy, drug-free techniques. (If symptoms last longer then 10-14 days, contact your physician).

1. Breast Feeding – Studies from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons show that moms who breast feed are about half as likely to suffer from depression than those who don’t. They relate this back to the decrease in oxytocin, a mood-elevating hormone that is release during nursing.

2. Eat More Fish – Upping your intake of DHA, and omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, as well as algae, can lower your risk of depression and if you’re nursing, improve your baby’s neurological development.

3. Try Light Therapy – Traditionally used to alleviate seasonal affective disorder, morning exposure to bright lights can boost your mood, giving you an overall refreshed and well-being feeling.

Cut back on extra sugar…way back Aug 31, 2009

Cut back on SugarA spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down so says the movie, but according to researchers Americans alone are swallowing around 22 teaspoons of sugar each and every day without taking “medicine” to help it go down! This in turn is causing a progressive spike in the amount of individuals clinically being considered to be obese. This information was recently released by the American Heart Association stating that it’s time to cut way back on our daily intake of sugar for our hearts health and our overall health and well-being.

The majority of that sugar being ingested is from soda and candy at an average of around 350 calories every day. According to many health care professionals, women should be getting no more than 6 tsp. a day or 100 calories of added sugar from sweeteners and syrups found in food before or after processing. For many men the recommended limit is 9 tsp. or 150 calories. Note: These guidelines do not apply to naturally occurring sugars found in fruit, vegetables and dairy products. Take a good hard look at your current diet researchers said, figure out where these extra sources of sugars are being added in and cut back on them for the health of your heart. To make it easier think of it this way, when you consume these extra and often excessive amounts of sugar you add calories which leads to weight gain as well as the displacement of essential nutrients that your body depends on. Average women typically only need around 1,800 calories a day, while men need around 2,200 daily to maintain sufficient intake of proper foods, nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

Best and Worst foods for your libido Aug 26, 2009

There is no denying that what people eat daily, especially in America, is adding pounds upon pounds to the increase of Obesity worldwide. One of the major downfalls to obesity is not only the negative impact excess weight has on ones health, but the advanced decline of individuals libido

There is hope out there though people! With simple changes to your diet, you will be able to revitalize your relationship in the bedroom and noticeably improve your health!

FOODS FOR THE HORMONE RUSH
1-OZ DARK CHOCOLATE Dark Chocolate Helps Libido

Chocolate is full of anandamide and phenylethylamine, two compounds that cause the body to release the same feel-good endorphins triggered by sex and physical exertion. Cocoa also contains methylxanthines, which make skin sensitive to every touch. Aim for dark chocolate, which packs more cocoa punch than lighter milk chocolates, but keep portions small people!

AVOID WHITE CHOCOLATE
White chocolate isn’t technically chocolate, since it doesn’t contain any actual cocoa, which means you will find no heightened skin sensitivity, or rush of the feel-good hormone serotonin.

FOODS FOR ENERGY
6-OZ SIRLOIN STEAK
Protein has been shown to naturally boost levels of dopamine and nor epinephrine, two chemicals in the brain that heighten the bodies sensitivity level during sex. Your steak is also packed with zinc which is a mineral that boosts libido by reducing production of a hormone called prolactin, which may interfere with physical and sexual based arousal.
AVOID ENERGY DRINKS
While the caffeine and sky-high sugar content will initially leave you bursting with energy at the seams, you’re setting yourself up for a major crash. Additionally, scientists found that maintaining a diet high in sugar can temporarily lower your testosterone levels, which in turn can deplete your sex drive. The more testosterone you have, the higher your arousal levels. Too much sugar sends your natural testosterone production into hibernation and your libido along with it.

FOODS FOR POWER
½ CUP VANILLA ICE CREAM

Ice cream has high levels of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that build your muscles energy reserves and boost your libido! All that calcium can also make you more sexually charged, since the muscles that control sexual response need calcium in order to contract properly.

AVOID TOMATOES
They’re great for you in other ways, but tomatoes lycopene and phytofluene can decrease your testosterone levels. The effect isn’t dramatic, but you may be better off skipping the marinara sauce if you want to get saucy.

FOODS FOR PERFORMANCE

1/2 CUP BLUEBERRIES

Forget about Viagra. Mother Nature’s original blue potency pills may do even more for you than that stuff! Blueberries are high in soluble fiber, which helps remove excess cholesterol from the blood before it is absorbed and deposited on your artery walls. Blueberries also relax the blood vessels and improve your blood flow, especially “down there”. For maximum potency and performance, eat a serving of blueberries at least three or four times a week.

AVOID SODA
Carbonated soft drinks will literally drain your sex drive reserves. Too much sugar will lead to un-necessary spikes and crashes in your blood glucose, ultimately drying your testosterone levels and your libido too!
Try these tricks of the trade to boost your libido naturally, and enjoy the time you spend behind closed doors more than ever!

Preventing Aging Joints and Bones Aug 14, 2009

Arthritis affects the joints, which is were two bones meet.  The joints are meant to cushion the hard bone.  In osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, there is a deterioration of the cushioning cartilage with loss of joint function and pain.  Another form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis.  It is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints.  Both affect people over 65 years of age, and the latter mostly affects women.  The most popular treatment on the market today is glucosamine.  It is usually combined with chondroitin.  A daily treatment is recommended and should be maintained for life.  This combo treatment is recommended not only for the elderly, but for young and middle age people as well, for prevention of the disease.  Omega 3 fatty acids are also great for treatment and prevention.

Osteoporosis is the result of the deterioration of bone mass.  This sign of aging is one that can go unnoticed and undiagnosed until it is too late.  The prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is best achieved through dietary supplementation, using calcium and vitamin D.  Your skeletal system keeps you functioning and mobile.  Take care if it, do all you can to prevent bone loss, and maintain your independent life!

HOW MUCH WATER DO I NEED Jul 24, 2009

Summer is now here along with hot temperatures, cookouts, and other daylong activities.  A common trap we all fall into during this beautiful time of year is not staying properly hydrated.  Around 400 people a year in the United States die from heat stroke and the majority of them were not doing physically strenuous activities.  Heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature. The body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down.  If you suffer from other illnesses, you have a greater chance of having a heat stroke in high temperatures. Here are some tips to beat the heat:
water glass• Drink a quart of water per hour
• Avoid caffeine and alcohol
• Use sunscreen
• Wear loose clothing light colors and fabrics
• Don’t overexert yourself

Most athletes are told to shoot for at least one gallon of water per day.  In warmer climates, athletes should also consume a strong electrolyte drink during and after training like Gatorade or one of my favorites Cytomax from Cytosport.  Remember that water is the best source for your daily fluid needs. Other good beverages include milk, herbal teas, low-sodium broth, 100% fruit and vegetable juices. Soft drinks will also count toward your daily total of fluid, just remember that sugar sweetened soft drinks and fruit juices add extra calories to you daily diet that you don’t need.
