Antioxidant Superfood

Antioxidant Superfood

Should you take antioxidant supplements? Even though most of us can lead healthy lives without supplements, we should still consider taking an antioxidant vitamin. The simple fact is that even though you may be living a healthy lifestyle, be dieting right and exercising daily, it does not mean that your body is getting all of the essential vitamins it needs to maintain good health as you age. This is where taking an antioxidant dietary supplement is a must for most of us!

Unfortunately the body does not properly absorb most of the vitamins it needs. An herbal supplement can provide the body with important vitamins like Vitamin A, C, and E; all of these vitamins help to maintain a strong immune system and general overall health.

Benefits of antioxidant supplements include:

- Stop free radicals that damage cells
- Promote the growth of healthy cells
- Slow down the aging process
- Help fight diseases
- Boost immune system functions
- Increase natural energy in the body
- Lower stress levels

Antioxidant supplements are noted for controlling the amount of free radicals in one’s body and reducing the chances of cancer and heart related diseases. Individuals that also want to increase their level of vitality may benefit by taking a natural antioxidant supplement. By improving your circulation your hair, skin and nails will look healthier for women this is just an added natural benefit.

No matter what your age may be, antioxidant supplements and vitamins are a must for most of us. From looking better on the outside, to feeling better on the inside natural antioxidant supplements will benefit you.

Food Dyes Pose Rainbow of Risks – Hyperactivity, Allergic Reactions and Cancer? Jun 29, 2010

Food Dyes Pose Rainbow of Risks - Hyperactivity, Allergic Reactions and Cancer?

Food Dyes Pose Rainbow of Risks - Hyperactivity, Allergic Reactions and Cancer?

Food dyes used in everything from M&Ms to Manischewitz Matzo Balls to Kraft salad dressings—pose risks of cancer, hyperactivity in children, and allergies, and should be banned, according to new studies recently released. A top government scientist agrees, and says that food dyes present unnecessary risks to the public.

The three most widely used dyes, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, are contaminated with known carcinogens, according to several of these studies. Another dye, Red 3, has been acknowledged for years by the Food and Drug Administration to be a carcinogen, yet is still in the food supply.

Despite those concerns, each year manufacturers pour about 15 million pounds of eight synthetic dyes into our foods. Per capita consumption of dyes has increased five-fold since 1955, thanks in part to the proliferation of brightly colored breakfast cereals, fruit drinks, and candies pitched to children.

These synthetic chemicals do absolutely nothing to improve the nutritional quality or safety of foods, but trigger behavior problems in children and, possibly, cancer in anybody. The Food and Drug Administration should ban dyes, which would force industry to color foods with real food ingredients, not toxic petrochemicals.

Blue 1, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 have long been known to cause allergic reactions in some people. While those reactions are not common, they can be serious and provide reason enough to ban those dyes. Furthermore, numerous studies have demonstrated that dyes can cause hyperactivity in children.

But the biggest concern is cancer. Back in 1985, the acting commissioner of the FDA said that Red 3, one of the lesser-used dyes, “has clearly been shown to induce cancer” and was “of greatest public health concern.” However, Secretary of Agriculture John R. Block pressed the Department of Health and Human Services not to ban the dye, and he apparently prevailed—notwithstanding the Delaney Amendment that forbids the use of in foods of cancer-causing color additives. Each year about 200,000 pounds of Red 3 are poured into such foods as Betty Crocker’s Fruit Roll-Ups and ConAgra’s Kid Cuisine frozen meals. Since 1985 more than five million pounds of the dye have been used.

Dyes add no benefits whatsoever to foods, other than making them more ‘eye-catching’ to increase sales. These scientifically detailed reports on possible health effects of food dyes raise many questions about their safety. Some dyes have caused cancers in animals, contain cancer-causing contaminants, or have been inadequately tested for cancer or other problems. Their continued use presents unnecessary risks to humans, especially young children. It’s disappointing that the FDA has not addressed the toxic threat posed by food dyes.

What is the best method for determining an individual’s ideal body weight? Jun 28, 2010

What is the best method for determining an individual's ideal body weight?

What is the best method for determining an individual's ideal body weight?

To determine ideal body weight, individuals should not rely solely on a bathroom scale, height-weight tables, or percent body-fat measurements.

Sound nutrition and exercise science principles, along with common sense, mandate that individuals should avoid setting ”hard and fast” body-weight goals. Rather, they should strive for achieving a level of body weight that is compatible with a healthy lifestyle (i.e., sensible eating, regular exercise, etc.).

All factors considered, the body weight that results from adopting such a lifestyle should ultimately be considered as the ideal union between an individual’s wellness level, genetic potential, and a state of reality.

What represents a safe, realistic, and, perhaps more importantly, attainable body weight for an individual will depend (to a large extent) on the following factors:

- Medical History

- Family History

- Body Composition

- Body Fat Distribution

- Functional Ability

You can find out what your ideal body weight should be by seeing your physician or asking a trained fitness professional.

Diet Tips 101 Fresh Is Best Jun 24, 2010

Diet Tips 101 Fresh Is Best

Diet Tips 101 Fresh Is Best

In a perfect world, we would raise our own food. Chickens running free in the backyard yielding beautiful speckled eggs with creamy yellow yolks, corn stalks towering over the carrot tops and lettuce rows. Reality is much different however, with apartments and condos meaning no available yard, work schedules and children’s activities meaning limited amounts of time at home, and then there are those who have no desire to get dirt under their nails. It’s a shame, really, because not only is homegrown food better for you, it is satisfying that the food you serve is the food you grew yourself, much like your ancestors did.

The next best thing is to find a local farmer’s market, farm stand, or greengrocer that you can trust for your fruit, vegetables, and herbs (and sometimes even eggs and freshly butchered meat products). These farmer’s markets recently have been sprouting up everywhere lately because of the demand of locally, home grown delicious fresh foods available right at your finger tips! You will know if it is organic or not, whether it comes from 4 miles, 4 states, or 4 countries away. There is a likelihood that these vendors have produce that has been picked at the height of its ripeness, instead of a week before to allow for transport.

Try and get out of the canned and frozen food rut. Take the kids out to the Saturday farmer’s market and let them sample some of the great produce and make choices they are willing to eat. You’ll be challenged to try new things, seek out new recipes and you just might find a few new foods to love! You will also find happiness in supporting local farmers and boosting your health at the same time!

Get Out and Walk Jun 23, 2010

Get Out and Walk

Get Out and Walk

A nice long walk for about 60 minutes a day five days per week can increase what is called your maximal oxygen intake by as much as 25% within three months. This referred to as the Vo2 max and it’s the body’s ability to consume oxygen. This 25% increase is enough to turn back the clock for 12 years on a person; it can also add years of functional independence on a senior’s life because of the increased health benefits.

As someone ages, the body will lose, on average, 5 milliliters of oxygen per kilograms of body weight per decade. Because Vo2 max performance declines through the years, so does the amount of activities you can do without getting fatigued.

Frequent and high impact walking can at least slow this process down- if not reverse it, so get out and walk people!!!

When someone’s oxygen intake is not at optimal levels, it can really take a toll on his or her lifestyle and daily functionality. Aerobic exercise, which walking most definitely is, will help with Vo2 max and can extend independence and may also help fight stroke risk, obesity, some cancers and osteoporosis.

It’s no mystery that exercise like brisk walking or any aerobic activity for that matter can build muscle. This can help in recovery from injuries and prevent falls that elderly people typically experience. You can’t stop the age clock from ticking but if you take up frequent walking and aim to increase that oxygen intake, you will slow down the body’s aging process considerably.

Healthy Snack Ideas Jun 21, 2010

Healthy Snack Ideas

Healthy Snack Ideas

Many people avoid snacking when trying to lose weight. But, believe it or not, for some people small snacks between meals can prove to be a great help in keeping feelings of hunger at bay, and thus help to keep them from overeating at mealtimes.

By eating a few small, healthy snacks during the day, you can avoid binge eating when you do finally sit down for lunch, or dinner.

Even if your main meals are well balanced, it’s easy to put your total diet out of balance with a few poor choices in snacks.

They must be healthy snacks…

The most important thing to be aware of is the type of foods you’re snacking on. It’s wise to allow no more than 10% of your total daily calorie intake for high fat, or sugar items – that would be around 194 Kcal’s for women, and 255 kcal’s for men.

The truth is, one or two well chosen snacks can actually help to improve your day’s total nutritional intake.

Choose foods that don’t contain too much fat, sugar or salt, and look out for those that provide you with more calcium, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Take a look at your food labels and try to choose those containing:

- Fat content up to 3 grams per 100 grams

- Sugar content up to 2 grams per 100 grams

- Sodium up to 0.1 grams per 100g

Have fun snacking!

Meal Replacement Powders Jun 17, 2010

Lean Body MRP

Lean Body MRP

Meal Replacement Powders or MRP Protein Shakes are a great way to stay healthy for those who are pressed for time. These products are high in protein low in fat and rich in vitamins and minerals. Unlike diet shakes, protein meal replacements are complete meals. They are pre-packaged so that you just mix with water or milk and then drink in place of a regular meal. They are convenient, cheap and taste good.

For you to be able to get the same benefits from a prepared meal as some of today’s best meal replacement powders, you would have to put together a meal consisting of fish or chicken for protein. A potato for healthy carbohydrates and vegetables or salad for vitamins. For those of us who live in a fast paced life style cooking like this 6 times a day is impossible. You can now replace 3 to 4 of those meals with a quick and easy meal replacement that’s healthy and convenient.

Benefits of meal replacement powders:

- Convenient

- Inexpensive

- Healthy

- Increase protein intake

- Aids in weight loss

Meal replacement diet plans are by far the easiest to follow. Two of your daily meals usually, breakfast and lunch are being replaced by a shake. These provide the correct amount of nutrients needed and usually only have between 200 to 400 calories in them. This is great for those wanting to watch their weight and boost metabolism at the same time.

You no longer have to sacrifice nutrition for convenience, MRP Protein Shakes are easy to make, delicious and deliver a balanced nutritional meal anywhere.
