We always love to hear response back from our loyal customers, whether it be suggestions, questions or feedback, we enjoy knowing what is going through our customers minds. Recently, some of our clients emailed us a few questions and here they are.
Question - I am going to be traveling for work again this month! I always seem to fall head first into weight gain traps when I leave town. What can I do to avoid gaining weight on the road?
Answer – Plan ahead, eating well while out of town can be easy! We understand that business travelers are routinely faced with obstacles all throughout their time away. Unhealthy food choices in the airport, at the hotel, where you’re staying, during meetings or social settings with work related appearances, it’s cool, we understand how hard it can be! We asked Julie Riggs, our on staff Registered Dietician her take on this particular circumstance, “If you have to travel consistently for work and are faced with poor food choices daily because of work related situations, then have strategies in place so you can easily deal with each of these issues prior to them affecting you.” She suggests first booking a hotel with well-equipped exercise facilities. If your room includes a mini bar, request that it be emptied prior to your arrival so you aren’t tempted by its contents. After you have checked in ask the concierge desk where the closest grocery store is, check it out and buy portable, nutritious items like precut produce, nuts, yogurt, tuna, salad kits and so on. Pack these items up according to your daily schedule, eat every few hours to maintain your blood sugar levels and be ready for what the day has to throw at you. Prior to dinner with colleagues, limit yourself to one glass of wine and two small hors d’oeuvres to prevent hunger and “face stuffing” during dinner.
Question – I seriously crave chocolate every day! Is there a possibility that I could be addicted to it?
Answer – Hmm, possibly, it honestly depends on whom you ask! Many experts believe it is our lust of the cocoa, aroma, flavor and texture that chocolate has to offer, while others think we can actually get hooked on the emotional lift chocolate provides many of us. Eating chocolate can boost the levels of serotonin and dopamine in individuals, two chemicals that are responsible for regulating human mood and behavior. Certain types of chocolate also include small levels of a drug-like substance known to affect the brain’s chemistry. Researchers a few years ago discovered that chocolate contains similar alkaloid compounds linked to alcoholism. Other studies have shown that chocolate also contains theobromine, a stimulant used in place of codeine in cough syrup. And yet another grouping of scientists found a connection between some chemicals in chocolate to the same mood elevators found in marijuana. Most studies came to the conclusion though that chocolate isn’t going to send people running to the candy store to get their next fix, making it less likely for people to become addicted to chocolate. But, what researchers did find was the people often maintain significant craving levels for the candy, and ignoring the craving can often make it worse. If this example is you, then allow yourself a few small pieces of chocolate every other day and enjoy them when you aren’t distracted.
Hope this helps!
