Protein is the most important part of your diet when you are trying to build muscle mass. Protein is the building block of muscle, so without enough of it you won’t build any muscle. Protein shakes are a great way to make sure that you get your daily requirements of protein in each day.

So you may wonder- why can’t I get enough protein simply in the food I eat? Well, you can! The problem is, are you really going to prepare that much food? Most likely you are not. So, the easiest and most realistic way to get in all of your protein is to simply whip up a shake.

Building Blocks of TissueIt is best to get most of your daily calories from real food. American Whey Protein (shake) is a great supplement when you can’t get your daily amount of calories from real food, but it is not meant to replace food all together. Real food is always best!

Importance of Fiber Dec 12, 2008

Fiber is an essential part of a healthy diet. Fiber is roughage or bulk found in plant foods.Fiber cannot be absorbed or digested by the human body.Fiber passes through the stomach, small intestine, and into the colon unchanged.

There are two types of fiber. Insoluble fiber promotes the movement of material through the digestive system. It accomplishes this task by giving the stool bulk.  Insoluble fiber helps to keep your bowels regular.  Insoluble fiber can be found in whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts, and vegetables.

Importance of FiberSoluble fiber dissolves in water to form a gel-like material. Soluble fiber lowers blood cholesterol and lowers glucose levels.  Soluble fiber is found in oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, barley, and psyllium.

There are many benefits of a high-fiber diet.  It lowers the risk of digestive conditions like hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, and diviticulitis.  It can also prevent constipation.  A high-fiber diet increases the weight and size of your stool, as well as, softens it.  A bulky stool is easier to pass.  If you have a loose/watery stool, fiber will solidify the stool by absorbing the water. A high-fiber diet lowers cholesterol levels, controls sugar levels, and aids in weight loss by making you feel fuller, creating satiety.

Women are recommended to get about 25 grams of fiber per day.  Men are recommended to get about 38 grams per day.  Getting your recommended amount of fiber can help you to stay healthy.

Fiber is an essential part of a healthy diet.  It is important to get both insoluble and soluble fiber in your diet for maximum health benefits  and regularity.  It can be found in many plant sources. The benefits of a high-fiber diet are endless, so get your daily-recommended amount!

Studies Show Zinc Fights Infection in Older People Dec 11, 2008

zincA recent study of 49 healthy individuals aged 55 to 87 concluded that zinc is an effective anti-inflammatory and contains antioxidant properties to help reduce infections as we age.

The study gave 24 members zinc gluconate capsules with 45 mg of zinc daily for one year. The other 25 study members received a placebo. Researchers measured blood levels of zinc, immune system and oxidative stress markers in the blood, and how often the participants got sick. Those participants taking the zinc supplement experienced fewer infections and significantly lower levels of inflammation and oxidative stress. These decreased levels are considered indicative of a stronger immune system.

www.everythingantiaging.com carries several zinc supplements to aid in keeping your immune system functioning at its maximum, including products by TwinLab and MRM.

Great information on Garlic Dec 3, 2008

Garlic is sometimes called a vegetable, but is more commonly known as a spice or herb used in recipes all around the world. It can be cooked, used in recipes, or eaten by itself as a delicious food. Garlic is, in fact, part of the onion family, and is one of nature’s most versatile medicinal plants. There are a few different types, with the two most recognizable being the Regular Garlic and the Elephant Garlic. The regular garlic is what most people use and comes in a white or purplish variety. The Elephant Garlic is a lot bigger and a little milder in taste.  It can also be cooked and eaten by itself. The use of garlic can be traced all the way to Central Asia.

GarlicNot only is garlic used for cooking, it is also used in the garden to ward off many insects, because it’s strong odor is a natural repellent.  This is also why garlic was believed to have the power to ward off demons and vampires.

Garlic is great for many things, but the one thing not mentioned yet, and could be one of the most important, is the medicinal uses. It has been used since ancient times to treat a wide variety of ailments. Today, it is the most popular herbal cure-all found.

Studies have shown that taking garlic can help reduce cholesterol. One clinical study said that eating one-half to one full clove of garlic a day reduced cholesterol levels by 9%.  Another study, sponsored by the American Heart Association, suggests that garlic may help maintain the elasticity of aging blood vessels. Over time, blood vessels lose their stretchiness and harden, causing elderly people to have high blood pressure. In this study, the average garlic intake was a little less than half a clove per day.

Other studies suggest it aids in reducing cardiovascular disease, cancer prevention, and even some suggest that it may help to relieve cold and flu symptoms. Some other studies have shown garlic may lower high blood pressure, prevent and stop the growth of certain bacteria, serve as a diuretic, and help in the long-term treatment of intermittent claudicating (restricted leg blood flow that causes pain while walking.
